The other day, I took my 4 year old daughter to the supermarket. She loves to pay for shopping using contactless with my card. She feels like a grown-up and I think it’s cute. As always, I gave her my card and there happened to be a bottle of wine included in the purchase. I was looking forward to relaxing with a glass later that night.

An assistant the hurried over and told her she wasn’t old enough to buy alcohol so couldn’t pay. My 4 year old started to cry. She thought she had done something wrong and that I was going to be mad at her. I tried to explain that the wine was for me and that she was just helping me pay, but the assistant wouldn’t budge. He said it was against the law.

I was so annoyed. I mean, come on, it was obvious that the wine was not for her. She’s 4 years old, for crying out loud. She can barely reach the counter, let alone drink alcohol. This was clearly taking it too far. The assistant was being too strict insensitive, and dare I say a bit over the top! He ruined our shopping experience and made my daughter feel bad. He could have just asked me politely to confirm that the wine was for me and let us go. Instead, he made a scene and embarrassed us.
